FOCUS ON NOVEMBER...

A month of November emotionally charged, based on friendship and memory. That will start with a tribute evening to plastic artist Malik Ben Messaoud who founded the Méta 2 studio in 1999, the same year as Ahmad Compaoré created the association La Boîte à Musique: 15 years of intense creation, generous and committed, for these two artists whose backgrounds are not that different... And that will end with an intimate concert at Le JAM to accompany the exhibition of recent works by the friend Olivier Taffin, a discreet and talented painter, and great jazz lover! In the meantime, you are invited to discover the silent movie "Chang" (1927) as part of the live performance which will close the Festival International des Musiques d'Ecran.

TRIBUTE TO MALIK BEN MESSAOUD

Malik Ben Messaoud, sculptor et founder of the Méta 2 studio at Saint-Mauront in Marseilles, has left us on last June 24th. His story is intimately linked with Bassens, housing estate built in the 1960s, with Lieux Publics and Générik Vapeur where he was trained to master monumental sculpting techniques, with the Friche to which we owe two outstanding projects (Bassens-Support Cité 1 and Méta 2) and with the areas of Saint-Mauront and Belle de Mai where he worked. His work contributed to open the doors to all the physical and mental "ghettos", plagues of yesterday but still today in our societies.

The Friche la Belle de Mai joins with Aurélie Masset, his partner and co-founder of the Méta 2 studio, and proposes to share a convivial moment with the ones who meant to him and who collaborated with him throughout these years. Round-table meetings, musical interventions (Rita Bella, Ahmad Compaoré, Hakim Hamadouche, Sam Karpienia, Nasser Soltani, Arnaud Taillefer), viewing of photos and videos will accompany the evening.

CINÉ-CONCERT "CHANG"

Solo performance as part of the FiMé festival.

Silent movie by Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack - USA (1927).

A clearing in North-East Siam, where Kru and his family live. Waking up one morning, he finds his rice field stamped. The guilty party is captured: it is a baby elephant, Chang. His furious mother comes to retreive him and destroys Kru's hut. Taking refuge in the village, Kru and his family glimpse through the mist of the jungle, not one, but hundreds of Chang. Too late, the herd is already on its way to the village...

Drummer, composer and rare improviser, Ahmad Compaoré is a musician of freedom. Of Egyptian and Burkinabé origins, he confirms his singular talent alongside Fred Frith, Marc Ribot, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Camel Zekri or Egyptian choreographer Karima Mansour. Free from boundaries, his musical world is a subtle mix of jazz, fusion and world music, sustained by Oriental and African influences, with great detours in improvisation. Ahmad Compaoré also teaches drums and contemporary percussion through his association La Boîte à Musique in Marseilles. Skilfully exploring various genres, he continues his journey on the road of rhythms, those of a musician without borders...

DUO COMPAORÉ & TERMINIELLO

Apéro-concert as part of the preview of the exhibition by Olivier Taffin.

Olivier Taffin, born in 1946 in Paris, is a French painter, writer and illustrator, mainly known for his career in comics from 1974 to 1994. Despite his various artistic activities, he never stopped painting since the 1960s. Discreetly settled in Marseilles since 2011, he favours this passion in the privacy of his workshop in the Panier area. His meeting with drummer Ahmad Compaoré ("Jazz", like him, right down to his fingertips) decides him to unveil some " rebel paintings" and exhibit them in tribute to the journey of this unconventional musician. Fragments from a contemporary and timeless work which he hopes will be commensurate with the warm welcome at Le JAM...
