FOCUS ON OCTOBER...

A rich and eclectic beginning of autumn with, just this once won't hurt, a solo concert in Paris at 59 Rivoli followed by a mini-set as part of "La Nuit Blanche". Then two improvised performances for Les Impromptus of Festival POC, before the closing jam session gathering all the participating musicians. And to end this month of October, three concerts at Le JAM in quite different styles: free funk, world jazz and rock. Enjoy!

AHMAD COMPAORÉ @ Crisis Festival

"Free fusion" solo concert-performance as part of the Crisis Performance Festival #2.

Ahmad Compaoré is a musician of freedom. With feet, fists and hands, he strikes, whips and strokes the brass of the cymbals and the skin of his drums. Of Egyptian and Burkinabé origins, he confirms his singular talent alongside Fred Frith, Marc Ribot, Jamaaladeen Tacuma or Egyptian choreographer Karima Mansour. Skilfully exploring various genres, he teaches drums and contemporary percussion through his association La Boîte à Musique in Marseilles. Free from boundaries, his musical world is a subtle mix of free jazz, fusion and world music, sustained by a compulsive playing made of frantic impetus, abrupt collapses and sudden explosions. With a virtually symbiotic mastery of the instruments he uses, the plasticity of the body contributes to make them vibrate in a connection altogether smooth and unbridled.

Ahmad Compaoré: drums, percussion, sampler

That same evening, Ahmad Compaoré will perform a mini-set as part of "La Nuit Blanche" between 20:00 and midnight.

LES IMPROMPTUS @ Festival POC

Solo performances as part of Les Impromptus of the "Portes Ouvertes Consolat" festival.

A proposal by the Association POC and La Boîte à Musique.

Organised each year in October since 2006, the Festival POC is a cultural event based on the promotion of plastic arts and artists within the Hauts Canebière area. The event revolves around an artistic itinerary proposed to visitors in fifty spots opened especially for the occasion: associations, shops, restaurants, theatres thus become original and surprising places of exhibition. Art galleries and workshops also open their doors to the great joy of the most curious people!

"Les Impromptus" of the POC festival are an encounter and a crossing of artistic practices which resonate and hold a dialogue face to face with plastic artwork. Sounds, movements, gestures that express emotion, the feeling of the live performer within a few minutes...

Ahmad Compaoré: drums, percussion, sampler

FEE: free admission

ORIGINAL MOTION

Free rock funk concert exclusively for Le JAM.

Californian guitarist Jay Crawford - member of the band "Battery Powered Grandpa" - gets together with Marseilles-based Aurélien Arnoux and Ahmad Compaoré for an unprecedented encounter between San Francisco and "downtown" Marseilles!

Nourished with all the popular discourses that the instrument has produced, Jay, Aurélien and Ahmad have initiated a personal and innovative approach to music, searching for new territories of expression. Their music gets off the beaten track, with the strong desire not to stay confined into a specific genre or in a codified language. On a razor's edge, they impose the originality of their style, remarkable blend of a more informal rock culture, free and singular.

Aurélien Arnoux: guitar
Ahmad Compaoré: drums

NAFAS

World jazz concert.

NAFAS means « breath » in literary Arabic. Vital breath, it is the force that nurtures, inspires and creates. Ahmad Compaoré, Fred Pichot and Sylvain Terminiello have imagined an eclectic and mixed music transcending cultures and social belonging. Between free jazz, fusion and world music, their repertoire travels along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea mixing oriental, afrobeat or klezmer influences, sustained by improvisation and spiced up with a touch of electro.

Ahmad Compaoré: drums, percussions
Fred Pichot: saxophones, flute, machines
Sylvain Terminiello: bass

Doors open at 19:30. Food and drinks available on the premises.

WHAT'S UP?

Rock concert around texts from women poets of the Beat Generation.

The women of the Beat Generation were oustanding personalities, sensitive, tormented, inspired, intelligent and independent, eager for encounters, affairs and exchange. The 50s and 60s were favourable to this: it was an era of mutual curiosity and dialogue. This "rock" project has no other pretence but to give a voice to some of these women. Composer and guitarist Jean-Marc Montera, a specialist of free improvisation and experimentation, presents his original compositions after poems by Anne Waldman, Ruth Weiss, Janine Pommy Vega and Hettie Jones.

Jean-Marc Montera: guitar
Sophie Gonthier: voice
Fanny Paccoud: violin alto
Ahmad Compaoré: drums

Doors open at 19:30. Food and drinks available on the premises.
