FOCUS ON MAY 2016

A promise is a promise: the musical agenda for this month of May is rich and exciting ...! Here is a non-exhaustive glimpse: the tribute to master Coltrane by a brilliant quartet gathered on the initiative of bassist Bernard Abeille, a creation of funk and gnawa fusion (USA/Morocco) at bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma's invitation, the Diwan of Biskra revisited by guitarist Camel Zekri and a new trio lead by a prominent figure in improvised music, Barre Phillips. Hoping to see you shortly, we wish you pleasant concerts...

COLTRANE'S SOUND

Jazz concert.

When John Coltrane arrives on the jazz scene, all has been said. He will make a synthesis of it and transcend it. Out of these fireworks, a spirit will emerge. A spirit of freedom, of rebellion, of power of sound, of greatness of music essential to the advent of a better world in which all cultures would meet, a spirit that jazzmen apply themselves to bring back to life in order to pay an honest tribute to this humble and mysterious saxophonist: John Coltrane. The musicians there on stage are seekers, understanding the musical language at best to bring the audience into this journey both technical and mystical, roots and clouds, thunder and lightning.

Rémi Abram: saxophones
Bernard Abeille: double bass
Frédéric Orsi: piano
Ahmad Compaoré: drums

CAMEL ZEKRI DIWAN + JAAL

Double bill concert: traditional music & world electro.

* CAMEL ZEKRI DIWAN *

Located at the foot of the Aurès Mountains, gate of the desert, Biskra like all Southern Algeria is the land of the Diwan, a ceremony practised by the Gnawas of the region. Throughout the years and following the mixing between the Arab, Berber and African nomadic populations settled down in this area, the Diwan has evolved greatly, becoming the melting pot of a fraternal encounter between the populations, especially through music. Camel Zekri is reputed to be one of the best specialists of the Sahara music. He gathers all his knowledge and experience into the Diwan in order to carry to its highest the voice of an electric Gnawa blues of a new genre.

Camel Zekri: artistic direction, guitar, voice
Bachir Temtaoui: voice, percussion, bagpipes
Karim Ben Belkheir: voice, percussion, bagpipes
Aïssa Zekri: voice, percussion
Ahmad Compaoré: drums
Loya: DJ, electronics
Jérôme Lacquet: trumpet
Ilyan Zekri: saxophone
Jules Lefrançois: trombone

* JAAL *

Alaoua Idir and Jean-Luc Frappa, the two former leaders of the band DEZORIENTAL are back with JAAL, their new musical adventure. An interlude, like a dot, a suspension caught in the air, the air precisely that blows between the two shores of the Mediterranean Sea. As if Satie and Bach had been wandering around the Maghreb, travelling trough the Middle-East as far as India and Pakistan, not forgetting New-York to finally end up in France. On stage, it is a rhythmic and colourful journey. Oud, harmonium, accordion, bass, drums and a hint of electro succeed in turns to chant the mixing, the encounter.

Alaoua Idir: lute
Jean-Luc Frappa: accordion, harmonium
Antony Gatta: percussion

FEE: 13€ / 16€
